The vast majority of architects interaction with Apple is with their products. Few of us actually work for Apple in the capacity as an architect. If you do, please share your experience in the comments or over on the Apple for Architects Google+ Community.

The world of Apple and architecture is converging right now as Apple is currently under construction with their new, "spaceship" Campus 2 in Cupertino, California.

What do you think of Apple's new campus? Use the comments to voice your opinion on the design.

OS X Yosemite's new Instant Hotspot iPhone tethering feature

For architects on the road, either for site visits or traveling for business, getting online is a priority. With your iPhone that's easy, so long as you have cellular coverage, but what about your Mac? With iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, Apple has made it easy.

Neil Hughes over at Appleinsider has written up a step by step tutorial titled, "Get your Mac online anywhere easily with OS X Yosemite's new Instant Hotspot iPhone tethering feature" that will show you how to connect your Mac to the internet using your iPhone to get online anywhere your iPhone has coverage.

AutoCAD for Mac 2014

Autodesk just released AutoCAD for Mac 2015, which is fully compatible with Apple's OS X Yosemite. So, if you are upgrading your Mac to Yosemite and are using AutoCAD for Mac 2015 there should be no issues.

Though for users of last years release, AutoCAD for Mac 2014 or earlier, an article over on Architosh points out that maybe you should wait.

Read "IMAGINiT Technologies warns AutoCAD for Mac 2014 not quite ready for Yosemite" for more information.

Have you upgraded to Yosemite or are your critical apps holding you back?

Retina iMac

Over on ArchitoshAnthony Frausto-Robledo AIA, LEED AP askes the quesiton, "Is the new Retina iMac the “iMac Pro” the market seems to be screaming for?"

The new iMac is the fastest one ever and can be ordered with a 4GHz Intel Core i7-4790k processor, which is currently the fastest ‘single-threaded’ processor in the world. Many applications that architects use are single-threaded, which makes the Retina iMac a better choice than the MacPro. As a bonus, Apple throws in a 14.7 million pixel, 5K display.

Is this new Retina iMac the Mac you have been waiting for?

Check out this tutorial posted by Method Digital Training titled, "How to Print Large Format PDF Drawings to Scale on a Mac." The tutorial walks you through the software required and how to set it up on your Mac.

Should you upgrade?

Should you upgrade?

When a new version of an operating system is released, like the recent iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite updates from Apple, the first question we should ask ourselves is, "should I upgrade?"

As architects, we enjoy exploring and using all the new and useful features that these updates offer. Though the temptation is strong, I caution against doing so right away.

I would recommend that you first update a second Mac and use that as a test machine. Make sure to run all you apps through their paces and check with each software developer on compatibility with the new OS's. Also, never, and I repeat never upgrade your main Mac while you're in the process of completing construction documents or before giving a presentation. Like texting while driving, it can wait.

For more questions you should be asking yourself and tips on how to proceed, Marilyn over at mac-fusion has written an excellent summary titled, "Should you Upgrade?" that I recommend checking out.

Have you upgraded to iOS 8 and or OS X Yosemite? Have you experienced issues or has it been smooth sailing? Let us know in the comments.

Apple's October 2014 Event Videos

During the October Special Event, Apple showed off several product videos. In typical Apple tradition, they are very well done and perfect examples of how to present a product. Architects could learn something from how Apple goes about presenting.
